HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS: Batteries spark more than a lift

Sometimes you wonder.  A man who stuffed his shoes with batteries and metal plates to make himself appear taller, instead found himself in custody as security officials, thinking they’d bagged a shoe bomber went on high alert at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

On Tuesday morning, a 27 year-old man travelling to Chicago was stopped by security, and asked to remove his shoes. .

Tucked into the shoes they found batteries and metal plates.  Not surprisingly, security suspected they had foiled an attempt to attack the plane, which was headed for Chicago’s O’Hare airport.

The man was taken into custody without incident by Peel police and was interrogated for between five and six hours.

Police were astounded when the man finally convinced them he was using the batteries as lifts, to make himself look taller.

Officially, police won’t comment about the incident, but one report said “He was thoroughly checked and rechecked.” When they realized it was vanity not criminal, they let him go.

Police said the man was released unconditionally.
